LAS CHICAS

203 Carlisle St, Balaclava - ph: (03) 9531 3699

There is no better cure for a hangover than a big, greasy brekkie.

Not that Las Chicas food is particularly greasy or unhealthy, but they do serve the best chips and that's exactly what hubby was look for in his breakfast menu after a big night out.

I've been to Las Chicas a couple of times before and really liked it. They have an extensive breakfast & lunch menu, the coffee is decent and the staff is pretty nice.

The cafe is huge, so it never takes too long to get a table even when they are full. There is a large courtyard in the back good for the warm spring days (hopefully) coming up soon.

There was a bit of a queue at Las Chicas when we arrived around 11.30am on a Sunday. We ordered their savoury fetta muffin as we waited - hubby was that hungry. The muffin was warm and soft with a nice crunchy top.

I had already drank my morning coffee, so ordered their freshly brewed chai latte (I hate the powder stuff some cafes serve). The tea was served in a pot with honey on the side. I got about 2 1/2 cups worth out of my pot - perfect way to keep warm.

Hubby was happy when his epic bowl of 'breakfast chips' arrived. Chips for brekkie are not really my cup of tea, so I gave it a miss. Hubby was happy not to share that one.

Large fries with tomato sauce and aioli ($9.50)

I was feeling pretty hungry that morning and chose the house baked beans and spinach on multigrain toast with a poached egg. Very tasty dish, although the spinach was a bit salty. The beans were well cooked, egg was runny and rich - good dish altogether. It's a generous serve and I couldn't finish the whole thing.

Hubby enjoyed his tomato and chorizo sandwich. It smelled great when it came to the table.

Service was good and the food didn't take long to arrive once we ordered. We did have to wait for about 15min to get a table, but there was a long queue ahead of us when we arrived. Food was well priced and well executed. Good breakfast spot in St Kilda.
