HOTEL LINCOLN

91 Cardigan Street, Carlton - ph: (03) 9347 4666

Hotel Lincoln is one of Melbourne's oldest pubs. It's been on the same spot now for 162 years and some of the patrons have been going there literally for decades.

New owner Ian tells me that it's been interesting for him and his wife to meet with clients that know the place so well and have such varied stories to tell about it. 'It's a bit of Melbourne history'.

Coffee cured ocean trout, radish, nashi pear

The husband and wife due have taken over Hotel Lincoln around 9 months ago and have revamped the place to be 'a casual diner where you feel like you are getting a nice meal out, but still feel comfortable to keep coming back to'.

Hotel Lincoln invited us and a few other Melbourne bloggers to try their $45 set menu. The dining area is well put together, but still quite casual; the menu is simple and flows well, and you have 2 set menu options that change seasonally.

Beetroot, pickled green tomato, farro, goats cheese

The menu was perfect for a cold Melbourne night. The house cured ocean trout was light and very tasty, the beetroot and farro salad delivered a combination of simple flavours blended together beautifully and the lamb shoulder was just that homey, warming winter roast that I could keep coming back for.

Lamb shoulder, pickled fennel, yoghurt
Brussel sprouts, slow cooked egg
Triple cooked chips

I really enjoy the concept of 'laidback sophistication' and The Lincoln got it well. Not too casual, but not molecular-cuisine-gastropub either.

Chocolate and beetroot pudding, white chocolate, dehydrated orange zest and creme anglaise

The Lincoln is worth a visit in my books and don't forget to order dessert. No matter how full I am from savoury food, there is always a separate compartment for sweets and I loved the white chocolate and orange zest 'clusters'.

Thank you Reymond Communications for an enjoyable night!
