150 Alexandra Ave, South Yarra - ph: (03) 9827 0488
Kanteen is tucked between Alexandra Avenue and the Yarra River with gorgeous views of the water. It's a funny location that feels a lot more remote than what it is.
The setting is simple and feels quite outdoorsy even if you are sitting inside. It's a gorgeous place for a weekend brunch when all I want to do is quietly read the paper over a hot cup of coffee.
Craving something warm and sweet, I went for Kanteen's oat porridge served with poached fruit and honey (the menu also includes cinnamon sugar in this dish, but I thought honey was enough to satisfy my sweet tooth).

Oat porridge with poached rhubarb and pear |
The porridge was served steaming hot, just the way I like it. It was thick and creamy and served with a side of cold milk. I really enjoyed the poached fruit - pear and rhubarb - on top to add some zesty flavour to what can otherwise be a pretty bland dish.
Hubby opted for the peppered chicken pidé served with pesto mayonnaise, avocado, roasted capsicum, tomato, cheese & spinach.
What I liked the most about Kanteen is the fact that it wasn't overly busy when we visited late morning on a Sunday. We got a table straight away and were able to linger around and read the paper without being pressed to vacated the table as soon as possible so that the next patron can come in.
Kanteen is not one of the latest hipster places in town - and that is a good thing!
