CAFE GAIA

Shop 3/4 Avoca St, South Yarra - ph: (03) 9866 7522

I was so glad to 'discover' Cafe Gaia while walking to work the other day! Cafe Gaia is tucked away in one of busy Toorak Rd's side streets. in South Yarra. My office is not too far from that area and I am frequently trying to find new places for coffee / brekkie / lunch whenever I happen to walk to work.

I'm surprised by the number of really average food outlets in South Yarra; you'd expect there would be more good coffee & food in such a posh pocket of Melbourne. Luckily there have been a few new places popping up recently and I'll make sure to add my favourites to the blog.

Cafe Gaia received a big tick in the 'good food' box from me the day we visited. First impressions were not the best as we arrived, as the waiter kept talking to the guys next to us for a good 5min before she could be bothered to look after our table. That was the only glitch though. Service was actually pretty good after that.

The lunch menu consists mainly of sandwiches and salads as well as some specials varying daily for soups and omelettes.

I chose the omelette special filled with broccoli, caramelised onion, brie and smocked chicken. Very tasty and rich dish. The eggs were cooked well and I was pleasantly surprised with how well the combination of melted brie and smoked chicken worked. Very tasty dish.

 Omelette special ($17.50)

My friend enjoyed the Cafe Gaia's piedina (Italian Style flat brad) sandwich she ordered, served with a little salad of Italian leaves.

Smoked ham, gruyere cheese, tomato and basil piedina ($12)

No coffees ordered that day for lunch; this is probably a good excuse for a return visit to Cafe Gaia soon!
