Green juices are definitely a trending topic right now but
as they become more and more popular, they also seem to get more complex. If
you search for a basic recipe, you can find more variations on green juice than
Fast & Furious sequels. And that is a lot.
While that gives you many exciting and thrilling options, having so many different recipes and mixes make it hard to choose just one and give it a try (ah, the great modern world dilemma...).
As a green juice addict myself, I’ve discovered that every
great juice is a simple combination of 5 different types of ingredients. This
allows me to try new flavors without over-thinking it.
So here is a very simple guide to what type of ingredients you should mix to create different types of green juices:
1. GREEN LEAF:
Kale, spinach, romaine lettuce, iceberg, water-cress, mache,
etc.
+
2. BASE FRUIT
(non-juicy fruit)
Apple, pear, peach, banana, guava, papaya, plum, cherry, strawberry, blueberry, mango, etc.
+
3. JUICY FRUIT
Orange, watermelon, pineapple, melon, passion fruit, grapefruit,
mandarin, etc.
+
4. A TOUCH OF SPICE/FRESH
FLAVOR
Ginger, mint, lemon, cardamom*, etc.
+
5. WATER AND ICE
CUBES
Some tricks:
-Avoid using the stems, especially kale’s. They
make the juice’s texture too fibrous.
-A touch of agave syrup is a good way to make it sweeter if you're still not used to this type of juice.
-As you’ll try different combinations, you’ll
realize that more fibrous leaves will be better mixed with more juicy fruits. Eg.: Kale (super fibrous) and orange (super
juicy) work really well, while iceberg (not so many fibers) can be perfectly
mixed with melon (not that much juice)
My top 5 recipes:
2.Iceberg + pear + passion fruit + mint: super fresh and
juicy
3.Spinach + banana + orange + lemon: perfect after workout
4.Spinach + mango + orange + cardamom: exotic and delicious
5.Iceberg + strawberry + watermelon + mint: fresh, juicy and
beautiful color
* If you have the whole pods, make sure you open them and
get only the inner seeds. Add the seeds little by little while tasting the
juice. Cardamom is a really strong spice and you want just a hint of flavor.
